Why does silver darken?

The purchase of elegant silver jewelry products is associated with the possibility of their darkening over time. The causes of this phenomenon vary, but they are usually related to the oxidation process. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that occurs as a result of contact with air, which contains not only oxygen, but also other chemicals. Contact with cosmetic residues, sweat and other substances can accelerate this process.

Here are the main reasons why silver darkens when not worn. In any case, it is possible to remove the discoloration by cleaning the jewelry regularly. It is enough to rub the metal with a soft and dense cloth for a few minutes.

The main causes of silver darkening.

Pure silver does not react with many substances, however, in this form it is not used in jewelry. Silver is very soft and malleable, which means it can be deformed, for example, by accidentally pressing it with your fingers. A key reason for the darkening of silver on the neck and other parts of the body is the presence of ligature, or various metals added to silver in the alloy. One of these metals is copper.

It is copper that is oxidized when exposed to various factors, which causes color changes. Visible dark spots appear on the surface of the jewelry. Copper is sensitive to hydrogen sulfide. Copper reacts chemically with hydrogen sulfide, which is found in microscopic amounts almost everywhere. In an environment with a high concentration of hydrogen sulfide, jewelry darkens immediately, but the process is much slower in the air.

The causes of silver darkening on the body are as follows:

  • Contact with skin and sweat
    The darkening of silver is not a supernatural phenomenon. Sweat coming into contact with silver contributes to the formation of a dark tarnish called patina. The quality of the material has a significant impact on the longevity of the jewelry’s luster. Higher quality silver retains its luster longer.

  • Low quality jewelry
    Low-grade silver with various additives or no plating can darken after just a few weeks, especially with daily use and active lifestyles such as sports. Jewelry made of high-grade 925 sterling silver and plated with rhodium is much more expensive, but such a coating significantly increases durability and resistance to wear, preserving the luster for a long time.

  • Contact with cosmetics and perfumes
    Cosmetics may contain substances that contribute to the oxidation of jewelry. For example, the regular application of hand creams without removing silver rings can lead to their yellowing and subsequent darkening.

  • Pollution and oxidation from environmental influences
    Environmental factors also affect the pollution of jewelry. Polluted air, which contains hydrogen sulfide, dust, humidity, high temperatures and chlorine, have a negative effect on silver. Under such conditions, residents of large cities need to clean their jewelry more often.

What to do when silver darkens: removing tarnish.

There are many methods of removing tarnish from jewelry made of sterling silver. One of the most effective ways is to use a solution of baking soda.

Instructions for removing black from silver:

  • Prepare hot water and mix it with baking soda. Add 20-30 grams of soda (about 2 tablespoons) to each liter of water. An alkaline solution is formed, which effectively removes stains on silver.

  • Place ordinary aluminum foil on the bottom of the vessel, and then immerse the jewelry in the water. The aluminum foil is needed for a galvanic reaction in which the silver sulfides (black tarnish) are transformed into aluminum sulfides. The aluminum sulfides are deposited on the foil, and the silver items are cleaned.

  • Regardless of the cause of the darkening or yellowing of the silver, after just 20-30 minutes it will restore its original appearance. Then remove the jewelry from the solution and rinse under running water.

Other methods of cleaning precious metals also exist, but their effectiveness may be questionable. For example, some people use a toothbrush and toothpaste, which is not recommended because the toothpaste can contain abrasive particles that can scratch and ruin the appearance of rings, bracelets, chains and other ornaments.

Unusual methods of preventing patina on jewelry.

In addition to the basic rules of silver jewelry care, there are interesting methods that can reduce the risk of darkening of the metal.

  • The use of chalk

It is recommended to place a piece of chalk in the jewelry box. Chalks absorb hydrogen sulfide, which prevents its chemical reaction with silver and thus reduces the formation of tarnish.

  • Storage in aluminum foil

Aluminum foil can protect silver from dark tarnish. If the jewelry is not worn every day, but only on holidays, storing it in foil can prevent premature oxidation.

  • Removing dark tarnish from jewelry

If the silver is already darkening, do not panic and immediately order new accessories. It’s worth returning your jewelry to a jewelry workshop for professional cleaning.

  • Polishing cloth

The easiest way to care for jewelry is to use a special polishing cloth. It gently cleans the metal without causing damage.

  • Specialized silver cleaning fluid

Such products are available in online stores. Be sure to check reviews before purchasing. Just dip the jewelry in the liquid for 20-30 seconds, use a brush if necessary, then rinse with water and dry with a cloth.

  • Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola is known for its ability to clean various surfaces. You can dip your jewelry in a glass of the cold beverage and leave it for several hours.

  • Olive oil

If there are no contraindications to using half a glass of virgin olive oil, you can try this unusual method. Mix the oil with one tablespoon of salt, dip the silver in the solution, and then polish with a microfiber cloth.

How NOT to clean silver.

You can find many methods of cleaning silver jewelry on the Internet. It is advisable to be cautious when experimenting and to avoid certain methods. Here are examples:

  • Hydrogen peroxide
    This remedy works in an unpredictable way. There are two possibilities: the silver may regain its luster or, instead, it may be covered with indelible bright spots.
  • Vinegar
    A dip in hot or cold vinegar rarely produces satisfactory results, and the unpleasant odor can linger in the room for a long time.
  • Ammonia
    Although many sources recommend ammonia as a simple and effective way, it is not recommended by jewelers. There is a risk that, in addition to the dark tarnish, the coating of the jewelry will also disappear.
  • Boiling
    Some methods of cleaning silver include boiling the jewelry in various solutions for 5 minutes to half an hour. As with ammonia, high temperatures can damage the silver’s coating, leading to deterioration.

Silver that does not darken when worn.

Sterling silver inherently oxidizes when it comes into contact with hydrogen sulfide. However, some silver alloys are more resistant to this effect. For example, jewelry can be coated with a thin layer of rhodium, which does not oxidize.

To prevent silver from darkening, jewelry should be cleaned regularly (daily).

How to prevent silver from darkening?

There is no way that will completely prevent the darkening of silver and provide perpetual protection of jewelry from unsightly tarnish. It is a natural process that occurs over time.

However, proper care of silver can significantly delay the darkening process and keep your jewelry in good condition for a long time.

A few basic rules should be followed:

  • avoid wearing jewelry during visits to swimming pools, steam baths or saunas to avoid contact with chlorine and high temperatures. Elegant earrings may be tempting, but wearing them in such conditions involves frequent cleaning of silver;
  • it is advisable to remove silver jewelry during sports and other physical activities to avoid contact with sweat. Sweat contains sulfur, which reacts with silver, leading to the darkening of the metal. It is not worth risking your favorite ornaments for momentary pleasures;
  • jewelry should be stored in a way that prevents it from being accidentally scratched or losing its luster. The ideal solution is to use a casket with a soft interior to protect against scratches and abrasions;
  • remove jewelry before applying creams or lotions to the body. If jewelry, such as piercings, is difficult to remove, avoid contact with cosmetics and, if necessary, regularly clean the silver with a soft flannel cloth;
  • jewelry should be removed when washing dishes or cleaning with cleaning agents. Aggressive chemicals can adversely affect silver. If the jewelry is worn daily and cannot be removed, it is advisable to use long rubber gloves.
